Of course, I asked those people what was going on because their profiles looked so similar. It's like they're even using the same phrases in their communication! I tried to dig deeper into this because their "I'm using this message because someone shared it in an online group, along with a list of IT recruiters who might have jobs for them" story didn’t convince me.
I asked around, and other recruiters shared that they had similar experiences. They invited these individuals for a call, but they didn’t even show up. And if they show up, they share similar stories like this one:
It's really difficult to say if this is a legit thing and they really use templates from one source who shared it with them, or if it's some sort of scam or something more sinister like that, you know, a way to gather more information about the company's IT/SW infrastructure.
I've seen so many crazy things that people were doing or trying to do over LinkedIn throughout the years. So, if it's a scam, I must say it's a very elaborate one. Kind of reminds a scam where thousands of fake remote IT workers channeled their wages to fund a North Korean weapons program.
These trends underline a grim reality: traditional background checks are no longer foolproof in the digital age. As we step into 2024, more companies are anticipated to ramp up their background verification measures to navigate through the murky waters of online recruitment.
